Purpose of the Golden Seniors:
To sponsor good fellowship and cordiality
To create wholesome recreation and pastimes, creating outlets whereby these diversions will uplift the morale above the daily routine
To afford an opportunity for all members to actively participate in all functions of the group
The Golden Seniors meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month and is open to all residents who have reached the age of 60. Spouses of members are eligible to join regardless of their age. The meetings take place at the Jack Woods Senior Center in the Municipal Complex located at 350 Hudson Avenue. The meetings begin at 12 Noon with coffee and Danishes and ends around 2:30 PM. There is usually a bingo game following the meetings
The second Wednesday of the month is a business meeting. A treasurer’s account is read and the various committees’ report on their activities. The fourth Wednesday is a social meeting where some type of entertainment is presented. This may be in the form of a guest speaker providing information, musical entertainment, or one of the parties conducted through the year.
Residents who desire to join the Senior Organization may come to any of the meetings and contact the membership chairman. There is an initiation fee of $20.00 and the annual dues are $10.00 per year.
Two scholarship are awarded each year to students who are high school seniors and residents of the Township of Washington. A flea market/garage sale was held at the Senior Center to help fund this effort.
Activities
The organization has a minimum of two parties a year during the year that are held at the Senior Center. They are a Spring Party which is a buffet and a Halloween Party that encourages the members to dress in costume. Prizes are awarded for the best costume.
There are three luncheons that take place at Seasons Catering Facility in the Township. The three events are:
St. Patrick’s day
Thanksgiving
Christmas
There are usually five to six day bus trips arranged during the year, which may include a show or an all day outing with music and food. Past trips have included the Westchester theatre, Lancaster Pennsylvania, Renault Winery, and an Octoberfest. There is also a trip planned that may be five to seven days. All members may participate in any of these trips. The cost of the trips is dependent on the location selected. Trips are arranged to Atlantic City on a regular basis and there is usually an all day trip to Mommouth Race Track
The Seniors participate in Arts and Crafts that are conducted at the Senior Center every Tuesday. Decorations, such as, centerpieces are made for the various affairs and for personal use. There is also a group that crochets hats, booties, and blankets for newborn babies in local hospitals.
Instruction in line dancing is also available at the Senior Center for members on a weekly basis and there is an exercise tape for those who wish to keep in shape or lose a few pounds. The Arts and Crafts and line dancing is not limited to members, but is open to all senior residents of the community.
The members use the card room downstairs for Bridge, Canasta, Poker and other card games. The games are either in the afternoons or during the evening hours.
